A very rare, original British Army Mountain Warfare Training manual, produced for the War Office Mountain Training School course at Glocknerhaus in Austria in October 1946. This manual was intended solely for the use of British officers attending the Ski Instructors Winter Warfare courses at Glocknerhaus just after the end of WW2 and would have been produced in very limited numbers. The commandant of the Mountain Training School at the time was Major A. G. Ryshworth-Hill M.C., a regular army officer who served with the South Lancashire Regiment during WW2 and went on to have a long career in the army, becoming Colonel of the regiment in the 1960s.
The manual Includes advice and information on skiing terms, the course syllabus, terrain, instructional methods, personnel care, first aid, ski tests, ski race organisation, snow conditions, avalanches, course management, ski waxes, maintenance of equipment, and safety precautions. For anyone interested in British Army winter warfare training and ski instruction just after WW2, this book would be an invaluable reference work.
The manual is signed on the front cover by ‘Lt R. J. Philpot’.
Condition:
In fair to good condition. The card cover has some marks, creases, general signs of wear and use, and wear to the spine. The binding is good and secure. The text is in good condition. There are Imperial War Museum ‘Withdrawn’ ink stamps to the endpapers and first page. The manual is signed on the front cover by ‘Lt R. J. Philpot’.
