THE MAGNETIC COMPASS ON LAND
Captain F. Creagh-Osborne R.N.
Superintendent, Compass Department, Admiralty
H.M.S.O., London, 1915
A very rare 1915 WW1 War Office military compass manual, covering the features and use of the service compass on land. It is a concise handbook, written for military personnel, particularly members of the Royal Navy's land-based forces. It includes references to the use of the compass in armoured cars, such as those deployed by the R.N.A.S. during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. The book includes a fold-out magnetic variation chart dated 1912. The book is signed on the front endpaper by 'R. C. G. Roe'.
Captain F. Creagh-Osborne (1867-1943) was an inventor and Superintendent of Compasses with the British Admiralty. He joined the Royal Navy in 1881 and went on to be a pioneer in the field of aerial navigation. He introduced numerous innovations in compass design, producing models for use on land and in aircraft. Many of his designs were put into production by H. Hughes & Son Ltd and the Sperry Gyroscope Company.
