A WW1-era compass adjustment manual, originally owned by Lt Stanley Fielder, a Royal Naval Reserve gunnery officer. All aspects of maritime compass adjustment are examined in detail. The author states in the preface that his intention was to help the reader gain a better undertanding of 'the Magnetism of iron vessels and the Compensation of the Compass'. Subjects covered include: magnetism of ships, magnetic deviation, objects of compass adjusting, the standard compass, methods of adjusting, etc. The book is well illustrated with fold-outs and diagrams, some of which are coloured.
Lt Stanley Fielder R.N. was a WW1 Royal Navy gunnery officer. Commissioned in May 1915, he served in various capacities, including on the mine-sweeping trawler H.M. Lark, and commanded H.M. Drifter James Tait. He was later in charge of anti-submarine net laying in the Firth of Forth, and took part in armed Trawler patrols and mine clearance operations. Lt Fielder was awarded the O.B.E. in 1919, and was described thus in his service records: 'He is a capable and zealous officer and is highly recommended'.
Condition:
In very good condition. The boards are in very good condition, with only minor signs of use. The binding and hinges are good and secure. The text is in very good condition. Signed on the front endpapers by 'Lieut. Stanley Fielder R.N.R.'
