THE COCKPIT
W. E. Johns
JOHN HAMILTON, London, 1934
An excellent collection of WW1 flying stories, published by John Hamilton Ltd in the ‘Ace’ series, undated, but 1934 (there is an ‘Xmas 1934’ gift inscription on the half title page). The book includes eight stories, with contributions by W. E. Johns, the creator of ‘Biggles’, Arch Whitehouse, Kenneth Quintrell and Rudolf Stark. Quintrell’s ‘Hoodoo’ and ‘The Unforgiving Minute’ are the highlights, while W. E. Johns ‘Ace of Spades’ is a typical Biggles story, featuring his favourite Sopwith Camel and a deadly duel with a German ace. The book is beautifully illustrated with eight colour plates by Stanley Orton Bradshaw, and illustrated endpapers and line drawings by Howard Leigh.
