’The capture of a system of hostile trenches is an easy matter compared with the difficulty of retaining it. Success will only result if there is an absolute determination on the part of all ranks to get the work done at all costs’.A rare original August 1916 edition of the War Office manual S.S. 112, Consolidation of Trenches, Localities and Craters. This manual would have been issued to officers during the Battle of the Somme, which began in July 1916. It includes detailed advice on the occupation and defence of trenches and mine craters.
