A rare December 1914 edition of the WW1 War Office trench warfare publication, Notes on Field Defences. The booklet is signed on the front cover in blue pencil by ‘2/Lt Simmons’.
Notes on Field Defences includes information on all sorts of innovative defensive techniques and equipment that were being introduced in the early days of trench warfare: from ‘Hair Brush’ and ‘Jam Tin’ bombs, to machine gun emplacements, flare projectors, alarms, trench construction, German defences, bombs, grenades, detonators and explosive charges. With some excellent diagrams of weapons and trenches. Incorporating the lessons learned during the Aisne battles at the start of the war, this booklet would have been an invaluable piece of kit for any British officer serving at the front at Christmas 1914.
Condition:
In very good condition. The paper cover shows minor signs of wear and use, and there is a piece missing at the top egde of the back cover. The stapled binding is secure, although the staples are rusty. The text and illustrations are in very good condition. Signed on the front cover by ‘2/Lt Simmons’.
