Dictionary of British Scientific Instruments (1921)
DICTIONARY OF BRITISH SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS
Issued by the British Optical Instrument Manufacturers Association
CONSTABLE & COMPANY LTD, London, 1921
A 1921 edition of the Dictionary of British Scientific Instruments. The first half of the book is an alphabetical listing of instruments and related terms and accesssories, while the second half (pages 181-334) is devoted to black and white illustrations of scientific instruments.
Many of the instruments included in the dictionary had not changed greatly since Victorian times, and some of the items included would have been available as early as the 1850s. An invaluable reference work for anyone collecting compasses, barometers, sextants, sundials, telescopes, microscopes, clinometers and many other instruments. The book is very well illustrated throughout and includes brief definitions and illustrations for virtually every scientific instrument that was in use from the end of the Victorian era to the 1920s.
