MANUAL FOR THE
ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS

War Office, 1899

H.M.S.O., London, 1899

A War Office Royal Army Medical Corps Manual, published in 1899, just after the R.A.M.C. was established. The equipment and techniques described in this manual were used during the Boer war and were still in use at the outbreak of the First World War. A detailed military medical services handbook, this book was intended for use by R.A.M.C officers, orderlies and stretcher bearers. It includes information on anatomy, first aid, nursing, emergency treatment of injuries, surgical and front-line medical equipment, transport of the wounded, and the duties and equipment of stretcher bearers. The book is very well illustrated throughout with excellent line drawings and diagrams. The highly detailed illustrations of the various Field Medical Kits and ambulances are particularly interesting and would be very useful to anyone researching the kit and equipment of the R.A.M.C. from the Boer War to the outbreak of WW1.

The Royal Army Medical Corps was established in 1898. Previously there had been two distinct organisations within the Army Medical Services, the Medical Staff Corps and the Medical Staff (officers). These two organisations were reorganised as the Royal Army Medical Corps on 23rd June 1898. RAMC medical officers were thus granted the same rank structure as the rest of the British Army. Within three months, RAMC personnel were serving in the Sudan, and soon after the corps was deployed in the Anglo-Boer War.
